Yes, I am a Woman.

untitled (7)

Newsflash: We all have feminine and masculine tendencies. Naturally, some of us might be more on one side than the other regardless of our gender.  Some of us might have an equal balance of both. These traits might be due to our childhoods or because we were born that way.

What I’m saying is — enough already. Sheesh.

Still some people automatically lump either gender into tidy little boxes. Men like sports. Women like makeup. Men burp and fart. Women like makeup. Men scratch themselves a lot. Women tell men to stop burping, farting and scratching themselves and give us their credit card already so we can go buy more makeup.

We all know it’s ridiculous to overgeneralize based on gender. I’m a good example. I grew up with five brothers. And last time I checked, I am a woman.

Here are a few facts about me:

  • I hate makeup.
  • I rarely wear makeup.
  • Once a year when I wear makeup for a special occasion, I have no idea how to apply it so I don’t end up looking like this:

mimi[1]

  • I love sports. I like to play them, I like to watch them on TV.
  • I live for Super Bowl Sunday.
  • I love to listen to bands like Alice in Chains.
  • I am strong. I’m wily. I could drop you like a sack of bricks with one swift chop to your trachea.
  • I hate washing my hair. I hate brushing my hair. I hate my hair.
  • Shoes are evil. Especially any shoe that is not a sneaker or flip-flop.
  • I hate purses. I have no idea why people spend tons of money on them. I walk into a purse store like Coach and my mind switches off. Picking out a purse is like watching my horribly-applied clown makeup dry.  I prefer to just stick my wallet into my jacket pocket and call it good.
  • If I carry a purse, (I own exactly one) I will spend the entire time flinging it around while yelling “What in the hell am I supposed to do with this stupid thing?! It’s like an anchor around my neck and I swear I will die right here in the middle of this fracking Coach store if I have to drag it around one more minute!”
  • I hate clothes shopping. I hate clothes. If I could wear the same outfit every day — say, a large potato sack with a rope belt — I’d be happy.
  • I have no idea what pants go with which shirt. Or what’s considered trendy or fashionable. Because I. Do. Not. Care. (also, I have bad taste in clothes, see above)
  • I hate shopping in general. Going to the mall is cruel and unusual punishment. While my husband will agonize over which coffee pot to buy, I’ll slink slowly to the floor in agony, crying “for the love of all that is holy JUST PICK ONE SO WE CAN GET OUT OF THIS HELLHOLE!” Then I hit him in the head with my giant ugly purse.
  • I don’t like to cook.
  • I don’t like to bake.
  • I do love to eat.
  • I don’t like to clean. I will clean of course, but I won’t like it.
  • I hate math but I’m good at it. I also excel in science and medical stuff. (that’s right, the technical term is “stuff”)
  • I love to play basketball and I’ve got a killer hook shot.
  • I love to play video games for hours, like Tomb Raider and Mario Kart.
  • I actually rather enjoyed all of the Iron Man and Avenger movies.
  • Sometimes I burp. Very long and loud burps that rattle the windows.

So is your mind blown? No? Fine. (ahem)

What about you guys? How are you unlike/like your gender’s stereotypes?

  1. I was just thinking the other day how I wish I was bald so I didn’t have to wash (and dry) my hair. It would also be nice to just let my beard grow. We’re not all sugar and spice, are we?

  2. Deborah the Closet Monster

I also loathe shopping. I needed to buy shoes a couple weeks ago and was thrilled when, after steeling myself to walk into the shop, I found three pairs in five minutes. If I am lucky (and please let that be the case!), I am now covered for at least a year.

Also, I once had very short hair to my boyfriend’s very long hair. The number of times I was called “sir” and he “ma’am” was astonishing. Li’l D makes that mistake, but then, he’s not yet five. ><

  3. Oh yes. So much yes to all of that. Except for the playing of sports stuff, and the technical medical/sciencey stuff . . . but all the rest. I hate my hair, I hate shopping, I hate make up, I hate shoes, I hate purses. In fact, until I was about mid 20s, I didn’t even OWN a purse. We didn’t have cell phones in the dark ages, so all I needed was a wallet, which I stored securely in the back pocket of my jeans. That I wore with a ratty old concert T. And sandals. Now, I have to be all professional and crap, so suits, shoes, make up and hair every day. I hate it so much! Can’t I just be a 20 year old college student again? Please!

  4. I would say I’m much more of a stereotype girl than you, although I’m certainly not all out with it. While I do wear makeup most days, it is 5 minute makeup, I have no idea how some gals spend up to an hour doing their makeup, I can’t understand what they do for all that time. I’ve also never had any treatments out anywhere – I’ve never had my nails done, or my eyebrows done, or tanning done, or waxing done, or anything like that. I do my own basic maintenance. I think if I was a proper girl girl I would have those things done. I’m also really bad at doing my hair, I aspire to have lovely hair, but mostly it’s just a mess. I do love shopping and clothes and shoes, although the older I get, the higher comfort goes on the priority list! Also, I would much rather drink beer than any fancy cocktails, so that’s not very girly of me. And I do like to cook and bake. Ok, in summary, fairly stereotype girl, but not very good at it!

      1. You’re not the first person to say that to me actually, I’ve heard from others that even if you’re not into beauty treatments in general, pedicures are lovely and relaxing. Maybe I’ll treat myself sometime 🙂

    1. See, I definitely have my days when I like to put on nice clothes and do my nails. I guess it depends on my mood. But I also love to drink beer. My husband does all the cooking so I’m lucky there.

  5. Can so picture you swinging the handbag about, (we call them handbags). They do seem pretty awkward to me, a backpack makes much more sense, can’t they be Gucci’d up 🙂

I could have probably guessed all of these, all the girls in my circle are the same that it’s a shock when they put make up on for a special occasion. I suppose they wouldn’t be kind of people if they were the girly girls. I used to know some and when I came out they were thrilled as they assumed I was gay so therefore would love to go shopping with them. I stress I used to know them.

    1. I wish I knew how to wear makeup, but I just don’t have the patience. I’ve no doubt I could USE makeup…maybe some concealer, a little spackle, some sandblasting….

And as for assuming you like to shop because you’re gay is like assuming I must hate sports because I’m a woman. It’s all just silly. Still people tend to lump people in categories.

  6. I’m with you on the no makeup. I’m just too lazy to wear it, and lipstick and eye shadow make my skin peel off. I used to work in a very masculine line of work: merchant marines, and I’ll never forget one day (or night- I forget) that some guy on the ship suggested to me that I wear a little makeup to hide the black circles under my eyes. I just about clocked him. I earned those circles and there was no way I was going to cover them up. Another time, some idiot, I mean shipmate told me that I had a pretty face and that all I needed was to lose a few pounds and I’d be really pretty. I just about clocked him too. I really should have. But then again I can lose weight, and he’ll always be a moron.

    1. I think that’s just it. I’m much too lazy. I DO wear a little makeup a few times a year when I’m feeling adventurous. The older I get though, the less I notice my dark under eye circles. Might be because I’m blind as a bat.

  7. I appreciate someone, male or female, who has accepted who he or she is, and has found peace and comfort with it. Nothing sadder than a person trying to be who he or she is not. Rather like walking around all day with your shoes on the wrong feet; you can do it, but it’s really uncomfortable.

  8. According to your list, I’m a dude. Oh, well. Doesn’t that mean that I can just eat, fart and scratch all I want while watching/playing/talking sports? All good. Somebody, make me a sammich! 🙂

      1. Seriously? Someone said that to you??! The nerve. *shakes head in disbelief*

If hiding my natural beauty is what makes me ‘prettier’, then maybe prettier isn’t what I want to be. The only thing I really notice when I wear makeup is the ability to see my eyelashes, which I do like, actually. Sometimes I just put on mascara and some very subtle lip gloss and that’s enough. 🙂

  9. Darla, it’s what’s inside that counts. And that’s a vagina from what you’ve said. The other stuff is all optional.

When I was young and gorgeous, I never wore makeup. I loved nice clothes though. (NEVER SHOES — THEY ARE ALL DESIGNED BY MEN TO TORTURE WOMEN.) As I’ve aged and, ahem, broadened, I find that I hate clothes because I always look like hell. So I put on a little makeup in the hopes of reclaiming what has been lost. My hair, which I never fuss with and almost never brush, is quite pretty — especially on the bathroom floor because it is falling out. So I guess I am a little of both …

    1. I’m a little of both, too. I have my days when I spend way too much time in the mirror. Mostly swearing and crying.

When I was young I wore lots of makeup and men always told me I looked better au natural. Nowadays I’m just too tired to bother.

But shoes? Always always hated them. I never have worn heels in my life. Well, at my wedding, that was it.

  10. I hate having to mess with my hair. Even drying it is more than I can handle. I wear mascara and a touch of not-really-visible blush. That’s it. And I’m totally with you on the shoes. It’s really best if they are flat. And comfy. I like math and logic and I prefer to work around men – or at least, I’m used to it. I don’t have time or energy for the girl drama.

My 10 year old son loves video games and sports and farting and burping and Pokemon and all that but he also loves having long hair and sometimes painting his fingernails and when he was small enough to play dress-up, he preferred to wear the frilly dresses… maybe with a sword stuffed down the front, but still the dress.

    Stereotypes suck.

    1. My son dressed up in girl’s clothes all the time. He’d put on my old dresses and walk around in my heels with a purse. He loved doing that! What’s the big deal? I don’t get it.

  11. I get along best with men. I prefer to work with men to avoid drama. As you know I recently quit my job because I worked in an office with ten women. It was like torture, the kind with water boarding. I’ve been told that I think like a dude. Maybe this is why we get along so well, D. Must be the complete and utter logical thought process behind only owning one purse. I only have one and plan to use it til it falls apart.

    1. You totally get me, RP. Growing up, I always found it easy to talk with my brothers’ friends. I could hang out with them, play Playstation, burp, drink beer, talk football. Good times.

On the flip side, I also like to cry at sappy Hallmark movies. Hell, I’ll cry watching commercials.

  12. Maybe that is why I am drawn to your blog so much. No article about how to wear … or where to shop … or what to do with your hair or sh.. like this (do you mind people swearing in your comments? I’d rather not, as you might disapprove of it).
No high heels is more than fine with me – I am high on the scales-side of life – too painful to lift that up just on my toes. And no makeup – I always say I am too real to be made up. Besides painted ladies are hung – I have seen them – London – National Portrait Gallowry …
I use some cream when my face gets too dry and itches – not against wrinkles.
I like to shop clothes – online – a girl has got to wear SOMETHING. I love to buy accessories – so that I can wear the same something and still have a different look.
But I am not into bling.
I do like soccer (a “male” sport here in Germany), and yes, I freely admit it: I do fart! After all – men shake it off – women blow dry after peeing.
So what does this make me now? Is my Ladies’ card withdrawn now? Do I get a Gents’ card? What is my fate? AAArgh, too many questions.

    1. Nope, swearing is fine on this blog. I’m a “family” blog, but that was a title wordpress gave me. I’m more PG-13 than G.
I will shop online too, less crowds, less hassle. It’s the aimless strolling around a mall that bores me to tears. I have to know what I’m shopping for so I can run in, buy it then run out.

  13. this is sounding awfully anti-feminine–not the post which is brilliant but many of the comments–being a person is what is important–not what that person does or wears or prefers–I like all kinds of things and do not really think we have to assign masculine or feminine traits

    1. Exactly. Things we like don’t make us more “manly” or “girly”. It’s just who we are. We all have our preferences that make us unique. It’s not good to assume based on gender in any case.

  14. *nearly fall of my chair laughing*

That is so me!! I hate washing my face and brushing my hair i only do that if I am going somewhere where i have to look presentable otherwise i wont mind being filthy at all..

  15. Oh, we have a lot of these in common. I’ve never been a super girly girl, and if you could see my hair right now, you’d believe me. I love makeup and having my nails look cute, but do I love it more than relaxing on the couch with a giant container full of pineapple resting on my belly and a fork in my hand? Uhhh, not always.

    1. Ha! Love that image of the pineapple. Yeah, some days I like to do my nails. Once in awhile I’ll buy a new outfit and actually pay attention to style. I guess it depends on my mood.

  16. singleworkingmomswm

I’m more of a tom boy, myself, but I like people to know I’m female, lol. I had really short hair in high school: that coupled with my lack of make-up (i.e. NONE), cut off jeans, Converse tennies, and ovesized t-shirts made it difficult for the opposite sex to know I actually wanted a boyfriend. Soooooo, as the years pummeled through I embraced my blue-jean loving style with a bit longer hair, a touch of light make up, and girlier (is that a word? No?) t-shirts so I don’t confuse myself or the opposite sex….which is good since I’m single….and looking….and hopeful that some day I’ll meat a man who isn’t a total ass. Do I love to shop? Only for horse tack. Do I like make-up? Only enough so that I don’t look dead. Do I like to style my hair? Only if a cowboy hat or beanie can go over it when I’m done. Nail polish? Comes off when I pick the weeds in my yard, so I only do it for fun with my kiddo. Can I clean up and wear a dress once in awhile? Sure! XOXO-Kasey

    1. Yes, I was a true tomboy growing up. I liked to play kickball, climb trees, put my younger brother in a headlock etc….Some days I also like to wear enough makeup so I don’t look dead. I will use under eye concealer and foundation if I’m really feeling especially adventurous.

  17. Ok, let’s see where I fit in here. While I rarely wear either heels or makeup and dislike but do-cause-it-needs-to-be-done housework, I love shopping and cooking, and being a girl. Sports, not so much, I love watching the Olympics, tennis and motor racing, I love speed on the back of hubbies bike and generally get on better with guys – less drama for sure. Dresses nicely, pays attention to what is being worn, like a bit pride in ones appearance, but equally at home (at home) in tracks, sweater and uggies.

    1. Sounds like you have a balance of traits. I do too. I will dress up nice if I have to. Usually stuns the hell out of my husband. I’m wearing a dress and heels this week for my college graduation and I expect lots of photos to commemorate this momentous occasion of me wearing a pretty dress. Oh and the degree I earned etc…

  18. It sounds like you are a cool XX with a generous sprinkle of Y and a cherry on top! I am more traditional, except in the bedroom! A lot of Y’s take over my X’s in that department and watch out! 🙂

    1. Whoa. SO much to comment on here. Your first sentence should be my blog’s new tag line.

Also, yeah. Um. The bedroom dept. comment — I’ll just say I can TOTALLY relate to what you’re describing there. I am also very much like a man when I sleep. What? Oh! You meant the other thing in the bedroom? Hmm…yes….I can relate…(why am I blushing? I am almost 44 years old, dammit!) or maybe you DID mean sleeping? If so, man, this is quite embarrassing..

      1. LOL. I like that being your new tagline. It’s perfect! 🙂

As to the bedroom comment, I’m not sure if I am like a man when I sleep (although I do snore a bit) but I definitely have something extra (a chromosome or maybe a third nipple) when it comes to… Oh gosh, I’m blushing too and I’m 50!!!!!!! 🙂

    1. teehee, you always make me laugh, Kathy. You’re right, Maineiac first, woman second. I think being a Mainer woman you’re almost required to be rough and tough to endure the brutal winters.

  19. Oh, I hate shopping too! When I was a teenager my friends and I used to hang out at the mall for hours — all weekend if we could. Now if I have to go within a mile of a mall I break out in hives.

    1. Yes! So true! I used to beg my dad to take me and my friends to the mall as a teen. We’d hang out in front of Chess King and check out all the guys buying their Puma shirts and piano ties. Good times. Now I hate the mall. What happened to me?

  20. Beer is vile and I won’t leave the house without mascara. I adore flowers and twirling about in little skirts and my mind goes blank when my kids talk about sports or cars. And I fucking LOVE this essay because you are so gorgeously, comfortably YOU. This is a manifesto, a calling, a spectacular charge to just BE. Honest writing always inspires the big YAY reaction from me. So… yay!

  21. I have a lot of these in common! (but wait, I’m a guy, so I guess that doesn’t count, does it?)
Where I break my gender’s stereotypes is that I don’t watch any sports, and would normally pick a fruity cocktail over a beer – if I cared about an alcoholic drink at the moment.

    1. Funny, my husband doesn’t watch many sports, either. He LOVES ice hockey, (Red Wings fanatic) but that is it. He hates football.

I would also prefer a fruity cocktail. Or a beer. Maybe both. Right now.

  22. April

I love this! I remember that we bought my oldest daughter a lightening Mcqueen riding toy when she was one and my mom actually told me to stop buying her boy things! Umm if it doesn’t bother me, then why should it you? My middle ones favorite color is blue and my one year old son ( the only boy) prefers the color pink, and I am okay with that 🙂

    1. When he was younger, my son loved to dress up in girls’ clothes, my daughter liked to play with Hot Wheels. Get over it people, really. Like that matters at all in life. Just be yourself all the time.

    1. haha! Would you believe this is the very first marriage proposal I’ve ever received on this blog? I would be more than happy to join your rec team. Although, layups aren’t my thing, I do better with 3-pointers.

  23. Let’s see:

I hate shoes. My feet are not shaped like the inside of shoes.
    I hate shopping.
I have cats, and I volunteer in a cat shelter.
Right now I own four pairs of shoes. For me, that’s a lot. Because I hate shoes.
    I’m addicted to chocolate.
    I have no fashion sense.
I have a degree in theoretical math.
Have I mentioned how much I hate shoes?
Most of the time I don’t wear makeup — but I have rosacea, and I sometimes wear it when it’s bad.
I live alone, but I pay to have someone clean my house every other week. And I don’t feel guilty about it.
    I’m not interested in sports.
    I hate shoes.

  24. You would probably get along quite well with my youngest sister, Darla: she’s about as tomboy as they come.

As for me, let’s see… I don’t wear makeup that often, and when I do, it’s usually just some concealer, blush and eye shadow. Just so I don’t look too much like a zombie.
I had pretty bad fashion sense for the longest time (though, in all fairness, I grew up in the 90s, which had pretty terrible fashion sense to begin with). These days I’ve got a better sense of what goes together and looks good on me, but my style tends to be distinctly casual for the most part. I have a handful of fancy/semi-fancy outfits, but those only make an appearance for special occasions and job interviews (and so far none of the jobs I’ve had have required me to dress up).
I’m not overly fond of cleaning, but I hate having a messy house, so I do my share.
I have always loved cooking and baking; I just made a loaf of banana bread and my lasagna is to die for.
I’m with you on the purse thing: I don’t see the point in having a dozen of them, or having an enormous one. Mine is more on the small side and it feels like a Mary Poppins bag.
Going to the mall is usually fine, though the crowds do tend to get to me after a while. When it comes to grocery shopping, though, I try to be as quick as possible.
I’m not too much into football, aside from the Army-Navy game (go Navy!), but I do love soccer, both playing and watching. I am not, however, particularly fond of tennis, much to the rest of the family’s chagrin.
And while I try to avoid doing it in public, I can belch with the best of them. Though I did know this one girl who could out-belch most guys. On command.
Oh, and I ADORE the Avengers-verse. Have you seen Agents of SHIELD?

    1. Yeah, as for clothes, I tend to stick to basics. Black shirts and jeans. Lots of fleece. Maybe it’s because I live in Maine that I don’t bother with clothes because I’m always covered up to stay warm anyway.

As for baking, I DO love the smell from the oven when I make brownies or cookies. I am actually a good cook and can make just about anything. I just don’t enjoy getting all the stuff out then cleaning up etc. My mom and my gram loved to cook and bake and were always in the kitchen with their aprons on. My daughter loves to do that too, so I hope one day she’ll cook for me.

I cannot burp on command. I rarely burp, but when do, it’s usually quite shocking for the people in the room. Not the most attractive thing, I admit.

No, I haven’t seen Agents of Shield yet. I really want to see Iron Man 3. Of course, a big reason is I have a monster crush on Robert Downey Jr.

  25. Love this! I agree, we shouldn’t be dumped into one of two categories. It starts with babies, we teach them that girls are pink and play with dolls and like to dress up, and boys are blue and play sports and play with toy trucks… It’s all quite silly.

  26. Shannon O'Connor

I feel the same way regarding shopping for clothes – I recently embarked on a “spiritual journey” just so I have an excuse to wear yoga pants ALL the time…if you’re interested in reading more about it, I have provided the link. http://sitanddeliver.blogspot.ca/2014/ 05/my-spiritual-journey-is-deeper-than.html?m=1

  27. I started using Stitch Fix because I like pretty clothes but hate shopping for them. Don’t wear makeup, if any mascara and that’s it (although I did rather enjoy the one time I wore dark lipstick recently). I kind of comb my hair and shake it and let it do what it wants. I’ve always considered myself more “tomboyish” than feminine.

    1. Oh, also, only like cooking when the inspiration strikes or I see something I want to eat on Pinterest. The cleaning up, etc. is what I hate and why cooking is usually few and far between. I wish I did like to cook though, so that I’d make healthier things to eat instead of snacking on chips and Triscuits after work.

And I have become quite the online gamer. Not like that’s a “masculine” thing, but it’s traditionally been seen as such. WoW, Diablo 3, League of Legends, etc. At this point I’d be happy to work at a gaming company in their editorial/content department. It’d be fun.

  28. Yep I can relate to at least half of those things. I do like to dress up sometimes and get fancy with make up and a pretty dress… but mostly I prefer comfy casual… or better yet, pjs. I’m not big on sports but love superhero movies and action. I am a metal head and my preferred computer games on the rare occasions I play are shooter games.

  29. I don’t know how to do my hair and resist any efforts to learn. It was either a pony tail when I was a teen or ‘wash ‘n’ wear’ hair. That’s what I have now.

I’m not a fashionista, but I totally love Audrey Hepburn and her classic looks. But where would I wear THAT? 😉

  30. I don’t like shopping, except for purses. LOVE them; always have. Still have a few from childhood. Seriously, could start a small museum. Heels? Not so much. And as for hair — I’m convinced I could have another entire career with the amount of time spent on my hair. Yikes. Men have it so much easier.

  31. cooper

I favor Mr. George Carlin’s words:

“This is my idea for one of those big, outdoor summer festivals. This is called Slug Fest. This is for men only. Here’s what you do. You get about a hundred thousand of these fucking men. You know the ones I mean. These macho motherfuckers. These strutting, preening, posturing, hairy, sweaty, alpha male jackoffs. The muscle assholes. You take about a hundred thousand of these disgusting pricks, and you throw them in a big dirt arena, big twenty-five acre dirt arena. And you just let them beat the shit out of each other for twenty-four hours non-stop. No food, no water, just whiskey and PCP. And you just let them punch and pound and kick the shit out of each other until only one guy is left standing, then you take that guy and you put him on a pedestal and you shoot him in the fucking head.”

Oh, and I shave my legs.

  32. I am very manly but also have many feminine traits, in part b/c I grew up around w/ more girls/women than boys/men. I gained a lot of respect for a (white trash) neighbor’s observational skills when she noted once–without any disparaging spirit–that I was very feminine. I will unabashedly tell the most stereotypically macho guys that I like opera, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, and have no problem wearing make-up. I strive in general for the Aristotelian ideal of balance.

  33. I have hair well beyond my shoulders.
I watch Ellen every day and shop at Target (there’s one million moms out there who probably have me pegged as a closet lesbian.
I have memorized a number of Broadway show tunes (oops… that’s more a gay thing).
I cry at movies (I get a pass on the last scene of “Field of Dreams”. Any guy who ever played catch with his dad is allowed to cry at that one… but “Silver Linings Playbook”????)
I do fart, but I excuse myself as opposed to rating it.
I love to cook, but that just came after a couple of years of my wife not being able to any more.
I hated the show “Jackass”, but that’s more a factor of IQ than testosterone.
I will watch football, but to me it’s like a chess game with all the pieces moving at the same time.
I really didn’t care for the movie “Braveheart”.
I couldn’t care less what size a woman’s tits are.
I once went to a collage with 1,500 girls and 75 guys and didn’t get laid because I had a girlfriend half a continent away.
The only dreams I ever have about Jennifer Lawrence involve either my son or walking her down the aisle.
I don’t see the big deal about at least 75% of Maxim’s 100 Hottest Women.
    and
I really only have to shave once a week.

  34. The woman in your picture is a famous German comidian. Did you know that? She was voted comedian of the year 2013. I like that you used this picture to show how you would look if left alone in the makeup department. Funny peice. I have 3 older brother and an older sister who played with them. I stuck to myself and my friends. The ones that understood me or maybe they just wanted to see my brothers.Just kidding.

Unfortunately, people stereotype and judge others…all we can do is try to be happy with ourselves no matter what.

I’m 30, female, and married. I would say that I’m very feminine in nearly all ways…although this mean guy in high school told me I wasn’t.
So let’s see…I love thriller/horror movies, especially slasher films from the 80’s. I was nuts about Indiana Jones as a kid. I don’t care for most romantic comedies today because I find them sappy and boring. But I adore classic movies, love Marilyn Monroe, and movies with a deeply heartfelt plot make me cry.

My reading material is pretty diverse. I like Nora Roberts sometimes, Danielle Steel, Toni Morrison, but also grew up on Stephen King…who hails from your lovely state of Maine! I’m not into sports much but I’m starting to enjoy basketball a little (watching, not playing). Hockey is fun to watch.

My appearance is what I personally consider an interesting conundrum. I was a very tiny, skinny, petite girl until I was about 26. But I had to develop a tough attitude because being so small made me a target for bullies of both sexes. I went through some terrible things and in response to the stress, I cut off all my hair and also damaged it with chemicals so I had very short hair for a while…very unflattering on me.

Then I went through a phase where I filled out a bit more, had some nice curves but I was still thin. I started wearing sexy outfits and heels. I loved wearing skirts and dresses. That was in my late teens, early 20’s. Now I’ve gained weight so I’m not in the best shape.
But I actually think my face is prettier now that I’m older. I wear makeup but I keep it simple…mascara, concealer, lipstick/gloss. Pedicures are a must. I hate being dirty or sweaty.

I love shopping but can’t do it as often as I wish I could. I mostly wear blue jeans, so I guess that could be seen as “tomboyish”.
I own a few nice purses but I’m not as purse-crazy as some women. I have a small Coach purse that was a gift about 4 years ago.

I love organic/natural bath products and skin care. I like beauty products, especially things that give me soft shiny hair.
I wore nail polish all the time back in high school…I want to start doing that again. I always wear cute earrings now when I leave home, even if they’re little sparkly ones.

I’m a terrible cook and baker, which I plan on changing. There are so many dishes I want to try my hand at making.

I suck at math. I was actually diagnosed with a severe learning ability called dyscalculia. Math is the bane of my existence.

I’ve grown my hair fairly long again, almost to the middle of my back…don’t plan to cut it anytime soon except for trimming the ends sometimes.

I wear flats nearly all the time now because I’ve developed a problem with my right foot…sadly, no more heels for this girl.

I burp sometimes but not intentionally. I have acid reflux so it just happens.

As to farting? We all do it, but I prefer to not do it when people are around…I just think that is more polite.

I can enjoy the company of both men and women, as long as they’re nice to be around and they accept me for who I am. I’ve met people of both sexes who were all about creating unnecessary drama.

I like Alice in Chains, too.

Something I noticed when I visited Maine is that a lot of women there are very “natural” in appearance. Their style is more simple compared to the women in my state. A lot of ladies with dark hair, like me, and it seems to be their natural color. Not too many of them looked fake or overly made up.
Whereas in Florida or California or even Texas, a lot of women are all about tanning and having straight hair and looking like Barbie. Not judging but it is an interesting contrast.
